It looks like THQ Nordic has confidence in their Alone in the Dark revival. The classic horror series enjoys a reputation greater for the earlier parts than the whole, but things might be changing if the prologue demo is a sample of things to come. But what did I think of it?

In short: too short but interesting.

The demo literally less than 10 minutes worth of gameplay, and that’s limited to walking around and collecting a couple of items; doesn’t sound like much, but the game has some promise. The demo wants to establish the atmosphere of the game and the colonial Derceto manor is the place for it, as if it comes straight out of a classic American weird fiction tale. And as far as the prologue is concerned, the 11 year-old Grace Saunders is our heroine. You’ll control the precocious little gingernut through a handful of rooms of the manor as things go from strange to out of this world. After some odd noises and a conversation with a seemingly paranoid fellow called Jeremy we move to contorted sculptures and swamp monsters. With all of this going on Grace is oddly calm, even nonchalant about the whole affair; that’s what makes the demo interesting—just what is going on in this manor and what is the matter with this little girl? Grace is the star of the demo and she, along with the setting, has got me interested in what we’ll see from the ‘new’ Alone in the Dark, and if this is a real return of missed franchise, or are the rumours of Edward Carnby’s revival greatly exaggerated.

There’s a preview available on Youtube if you want more on Alone in the Dark that you can watch below. The game is set to release on the 25th of October, 2023, for the PS5, Xbox Series and PC.
