If there’s one thing that always surprises me it’s the amount of time and effort (and talent) some videogames fans are willing to expend expressing their enthusiasm for the hobby; and for free no less. Today that impressive expression comes from the people over Kart Krew, a group of fans developers who have put together an all-new Sonic kart racer—no, not Sonic Drift 3.

The new racer, called Dr. Robotnik’s Ring Racers is out now, for free, to Windows and Mac users, with compatibility for Linux and Steam Deck systems coming later.

Ring Racers mixed 2D and 3D graphics to great effect, a suite of items to use, its own mechanics (so it’s not just a Mario Kart knock-off) and it even offers both local and online multiplayer.

With secrets to unlock, multiple characters to play as and modes to choose, it’s no wonder that the people over at Kart Krew have spent more than five years working on the project. And now they’ve graciously released it for others to enjoy.

If you want to learn more about Dr. Robotnik’s Ring Racers, or if you want to download the game you can do so over on the official Kart Krew site here.

Playing videogames, writing about videogames, considering videogames—that about sums it up. Videogames are the one hobby that I’ve kept since I was only little, zapping ducks on the NES or knocking out MR. X. And when I’m not enjoying classics from the bit generation of games or checking out those earliest of polygons, I’m probably playing something from today’s age of modern gaming: if I’m not complaining about it. Something I’m doing at the moment? Returning to the many Final Fantasy games on the Switch to complete a couple more.
