It’s the biggest licencing agreement that the retro tyke has managed to put together; Capcom games are coming to the not yet released Evercade EXP handheld machine. There is one wrinkle in the velvet though, because this Capcom collection is built into the Evercade EXP.

In a radical departure from their regular practice, not to mention the publicly disclosed ethos of the Evercade, the 18 Capcom titles (Breath of Fire) will not be available as a physical cartridge that can be used on the original Evercade handheld or the Evercade VS, the home console of the Evercade brand.

The news is something of a mixed bag. It’s no doubt that getting Capcom games on the Evercade is a few rungs up the proverbial ladder. That’s not to disparage any of the companies that have already licenced their games to Evercade, only that – even with names like Atari and Namco – Capcom is quite probably the most recognisable company to sign on with Evercade. However, the great draw of the Evercade is the fact that you own the games you buy. The Evercade differentiates itself from any number of emulation machines out there by giving fans officially licence games on cartridges, with manuals (as slight a they may be).
Hopefully this won’t prove to be a trend going forward with Evercade and the next set of games coming to the system.
And who knows, maybe a good show from the EXP will see Capcom and Evercade be able to put together a physical release in the future — and any time Stage-Select sees a Breath of Fire game pop up we can’t help but feel a little bit excited.
