Redesigned Polymega

Finally, a disc tray

We wrote about Polymega’s redesign a little while ago, with promises that the new version of the emulation machine will be more powerful, alleviating some of the (unacceptable) performance issues. But it’s not just an increase in power that this new version of the Polymega is in for, but there will also be a mechanical disc tray in this redesign too.

This might seem a little strange but I dislike slot loading disc trays, that’s the kind that sucks discs in (horrible), and I’m not a massive fan of mechanical trays either to be honest—I much prefer a top loading drive the original Playstation, both for simplicity and as a hardier feature more generally with less moving parts to fail, but this mechanical tray is still much better than the current design of the Polymega; the current slot loading design has already suffered from several reported issues, so hopefully this change will at least mean we’ll hear a few less of these problems in the future.

Aside from all this, my own thoughts on the new Polymega design are that, although I hope the new design will mean that the Polymega might actually be made a product with the money, and that improvements to emulation and the numerous bug fixes that need to be rolled out with follow on from this, but it’s hard not to feel a bit like the proverbial guinea pig here, having bought what will be a Polymega model which, if makers Playmaji are to be believed, will be an inferior version.
