After stealing the recent Game Awards show with the surprise resuscitation of 5 classic Sega franchises we’re eager to see what Sega does next. The original announcement that series like Shinobi, Golden Axe and Streets of Rage were on a comeback was exciting enough, but Sega also promised ‘more’ would also follow, and now it looks like the people over at Gematsu have sniffed out some new trademarks Sega have filed.

As well as the 5 games shown at the Game Awards these new trademarks include:

  • After Burner
  • Altered Beast
  • Eternal Champions
  • House Of The Dead
  • Kid Chameleon
  • Outrun
  • Super Monkey Ball

So Sega are busy with paperwork, and although that’s exciting it doesn’t necessarily mean that we’re about to see a new metamorphic showdown with Altered Beast or a brave new challenger for Street Fighter or Tekken in the fighting game department.

Although new games in these franchises matches up to Sega’s latest reveals and their stated strategy in recent fiscal reports it’s worth remembering that companies file trademarks all the time; these could be in anticipation of new games or Sega just being mindful of the future. Then there’s Sega’s ‘super game’ project, and there’s possibilities that these older games have something to do with that too, after all, Sega isn’t shy about putting their old games in new games as anyone who has played Judgement or Yakuza games can attest to.

I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see some of these games get a new lease on life, but whether they’re all going to get the sort of treatment that Golden Axe and Shinobi seem to be in for is another matter.

Playing videogames, writing about videogames, considering videogames—that about sums it up. Videogames are the one hobby that I’ve kept since I was only little, zapping ducks on the NES or knocking out MR. X. And when I’m not enjoying classics from the bit generation of games or checking out those earliest of polygons, I’m probably playing something from today’s age of modern gaming: if I’m not complaining about it. Something I’m doing at the moment? Collecting Legendary Pokemon that I missed in Arceus and Sword the first time around.
