I heard an interesting rumor the other day: Apparently, Sony has begun work on a brand-new handheld console, with some people even dubbing it the PS Vita 2.

For the record, I don’t believe we’ll ever be treated to a PS Vita 2. However, the likelihood of Sony working on a new handheld seems fairly high to me given thatl, the Nintendo Switch is on the verge of becoming the best-selling game console of all time, the Steam Deck has finally established Valve as a serious hardware manufacturer, and every other computer company on the planet, it seems, has a brand-new gaming PC handheld hybrid ready for release every other weekend.

That might be a slight exaggeration, but what isn’t is that a new, well-supported Sony handheld would almost certainly reinvigorate the Japanese market, which has somewhat cooled in regards to the PlayStation brand as of late. Not to mention, gamers, on the whole, are more likely to embrace the concept of physical-free media when it’s packaged in a handheld form as opposed to a large under-the-television console box—an all-digital future in the palm of your hand, if you will. So why wouldn’t Sony give the whole handheld thing another shot?

All that to one side, though, the thing for me which that makes the possibility of a new Sony handheld a real one is Microsoft and Nintendo. I personally can’t see a future where Nintendo goes back to a traditional home console setup. Meanwhile, Microsoft, in their need to push Game Pass, is prioritizing its distribution across more devices, not less. A cloud-based Xbox console and handheld are almost certain at this point so. From a business standpoint, Sony will surely follow suit, and I personally can’t wait for an all new PS Vita 2.
