If ever there was a program that made me believe I could make my own RPG, that gave me hope that my childhood dreams, my innocence driven, unbound creativity could one day be realised, and that I could make my own videogame, RPG Maker is it. More properly speaking, the RPG Maker series has raised so much imagination from prospective game developers over the years, and some of them have actually gone on to make something, even a successful game or two. Now the next incarnation of the RPG Maker engine, called RPG Maker U2U, has hit Steam, so fans can add the title to their wish lists.

The big change for RPG Maker U2U is the inclusion of 3D environments in the engine, a first for the official releases of the series. Now fans can conjure up their dream RPGs in 2.5D.

Playing videogames, writing about videogames, considering videogames—that about sums it up. Videogames are the one hobby that I’ve kept since I was only little, zapping ducks on the NES or knocking out MR. X. And when I’m not enjoying classics from the bit generation of games or checking out those earliest of polygons, I’m probably playing something from today’s age of modern gaming: if I’m not complaining about it. Something I’m doing at the moment? Returning to Turok with the collection on Switch.
