More problems, more money

So Playmaji is sending out emails to announce the news that they are upgrading their emulation console and releasing the remix they’ve been talking about for years.

If you’re unaware, Playmaji are the company behind the Polymega, an emulation console that allows you to make copies of you’re old games for many 8, 16 and 32-bit consoles to play on the Polymega (it lets you do it with Nintendo 64 too). The machine has had no end of problems, with years-long delays, underwhelming emulation (especially when you consider the price) digital games that were sold as part of the system only for those games to be removed later, then returned after an outcry, though only in part, and updates to the Polymega’s firmware that seemed to introduce bigger problems then fixes on more than one occasion.

Now we have the news that, going forward, all new Polymega consoles will be redesigned with better hardware ‘several times more powerful than the original’, and that the Remix, a separate piece of kit that allows you to copy your games like the Polymega, but to a PC instead, using an app that Playmaji is developing.

I’ve copied the email below for your perusal; but for me I have to say I find it difficult to muster any kind of excitement for the news. I’ve had my Polymega for years now (I will be writing a proper review for it as some point), and when it works I really enjoy it, but the issues that have come with it, including but not limited to the ones I’ve listed above have soured me somewhat. It’s unfortunate, nut this looks more like the same from Playmaji: we know there are all these problems but hey, here’s something new we want to sell you. That might be a little unfair, but with the news that a new, more powerful Polymega is release, one with better performance we may see some of these problems cleared up, and for all of us that paid for the original, well, I suppose we might just end up as the test cases.

Polymega Base Unit Shipping Status

First, an update on Base Units. Over the past year, production has faced some well-known challenges. To address this, we’ve almost completely re-engineered the Polymega Base Unit with new, upgraded hardware that is several times more powerful than the original PM01.

The new Polymega features more CPU cores, higher clock speeds, double the RAM, increased internal storage, and quieter operation. In the short term, the biggest benefit will be significantly improved N64 performance.

All existing pre-orders will automatically be upgraded to the new system for free — no action is required. More hardware details are inbound, and we appreciate your patience. For those interested in getting one of the new systems, we plan to re-open pre-orders for the new Base Unit in the early Summer.

What’s Polymega Remix, you say?

If you’re a retro game collector with a compatible PC or handheld device, Remix is designed for you. It allows you to preserve your physical game collection just like the Polymega Base Unit — but with more flexibility in how and where you play.

With Remix,
preservation and gameplay is powered by the free Polymega App, launching first on Windows 11-compatible devices. Simply connect Remix via USB to your device, launch the Polymega App, then insert CD games and Cartridges (via Element Modules, sold separately) and start digitizing your collection. Once you’re finished, disconnect Remix, and launch Polymega App any time to enjoy your games at home or on the go.

The gaming and installation experience closely mirrors the premium Polymega console interface many of you already know, including the legendary Polymega game database, Virtual Display modes, Patch Support, Custom Playlists, Extended Set game installations, Polymega Collection game support, and more.

At launch, you can play Polymega on Windows PCs, laptops, PC-Gaming handhelds, Intel Macs, and more. We aim to bring more platforms through the coming months. Truly though — the best part of Polymega Remix is the price. At just $199 USD, its the most affordable way ever to get into Polymega!

Remix Pre-Orders opening Tomorrow

Polymega Remix pre-orders open this Thursday, April 16 at 8 AM PST.
Orders will ship in May 2026 (yes, you read that right!) in chronological order. Polymega App Early Access will be available in May as a free download from Polymega.com.

Ed-itor-in-chief

Playing videogames, writing about videogames, considering videogames—that about sums it up. Videogames are the one hobby that I’ve kept since I was only little, zapping ducks on the NES or knocking out MR. X. And when I’m not enjoying classics from the bit generation of games or checking out those earliest of polygons, I’m probably playing something from today’s age of modern gaming: if I’m not complaining about it. Something I’m doing at the moment? Taking the Multisystem 2 for a spin.
