It looks like Atari is looking back on a bygone age and asking ‘why can’t I go back there?’ Atari might not be able to go back in time, but they seem to have a clear strategy for bringing some of the classics from – back then – to – right now – with their most recent purchases.

Stage-Select already wrote about how Atari purchased remaster maestros Nightdive Studios, and now they’ve acquired a large number of older console and PC games.

Amongst these new acquisitions are a number of titles that Atari used to own, sold off when the original Atari ceased to exist after bankruptcy and transmogrified into Infogrames — which itself went bankrupt and then sold off many of these intellectual properties. Not only has Atari gotten their hands on games they used to own though; Accolade is perhaps the most well known of the acquisitions in this deal, and that includes the famous (famous for his infamy) Bubsy Bobcat.

Any number of these games could now be in the frame for re-releases to new consoles, both physically and digitally, according to Atari CEO Wade Rosen. All of this make the Nightdive Studios purchase more meaningful, being that the company has expertise in bringing old games to new platforms.
