Playstation going digital

No more games

Sony has passed the Rubicon, bought a shovel, passed back over the Rubicon, dug a grave and buried Playstation. On the official Playstation blog it’s been confirmed that, as of January 2028, Sony will no longer be producing discs for videogames. That’s right, no more physical games if you’re a Playstation fan. It’s very bad news, not very surprising news, but very bad news. Sony, as well as much of the videogames industry has been moving in this direction, joining PC games in doing away with physical games, but I have been taken back by how quickly Sony is moving to this. I had expect to see another generation from Sony giving us a detachable disc drive, as they have done with the PS5. Instead we’re seeing Sony digging into their pockets and only finding a few gold bars—certainly not enough to keep them happy.

On the official blog it’s written the move to digital ‘will enable us to align more closely with how most of our community prefers’, I suppose for the minority that don’t prefer digital it’s tough luck.

For me it seems that the Playstation 5 will be my last Playstation console; I cannot see a reason to own a console where I don’t actually own any of the games I buy.

Ed-itor-in-chief

Playing videogames, writing about videogames, considering videogames—that about sums it up. Videogames are the one hobby that I’ve kept since I was only little, zapping ducks on the NES or knocking out MR. X. And when I’m not enjoying classics from the bit generation of games or checking out those earliest of polygons, I’m probably playing something from today’s age of modern gaming: if I’m not complaining about it. Something I’m doing at the moment? Taking the Multisystem 2 for a spin.
