Romero Games no more?

If you’ve ever heard of John Romero then you’re probably of a certain age, or you’re a fan of classic Doom (or Wolfenstein, Quake, Hexen and more). The man has something of a legend about him, some may say he is perhaps vaunted, but there’s no denying that Mr. Romero has been very important to videogames in the right way. Unfortunately Mr. Romero has had a rather slow output in the latter end of his career, and it looks like that dearth is set to continue thanks to the hard times over at Microsoft.

It turns out that the title Romero Games was working on was being funded by Microsoft, so when taking account of what could be cut from Xbox one of the items on the list was clearly this unnamed project. How bad the situation is at Romero Games is not quite known as some of the information comes from an anonymous source (which includes a claim that everyone at the studio has lost their jobs), but the withdrawal of funding for the named project has bee confirmed by Mr. Romero himself. Hopefully there is some way the Studio can find funding and continue work on the game, if that’s even possible given we don’t know details of the deal struck with Microsoft.

Playing videogames, writing about videogames, considering videogames—that about sums it up. Videogames are the one hobby that I’ve kept since I was only little, zapping ducks on the NES or knocking out MR. X. And when I’m not enjoying classics from the bit generation of games or checking out those earliest of polygons, I’m probably playing something from today’s age of modern gaming: if I’m not complaining about it. Something I’m doing at the moment? Taking the Nintendo Switch 2 for a spin.
