Polymega Collection 1 and 2

When Playmaji finally shipped the Polymega emulation console (and it’s numerous modules) that I had on order after roughly a year and a half (as well as for many other customers) I wrote that hopefully it was the start of a turnaround for the company; I was disappointed. Since that time, I received a console that didn’t’ work and had to sent back to the U.S.A. for repairs, around that time there has been an update to allow Nintendo 64 games to be loaded onto the machine with a module to go with it, but that update introduced several major issues: pre-installed games were removed, Super Nintendo Emulation has been spotty at best for many and a screeching noise followed by a system crash (among other things) came about with that upadte. And all of this has been going on for literally months with almost no meaningful interaction from Playmaji about any of it. With all that in mind, imagine my surprise that Playmaji decided to reveal yesterday a new update is on the way, and will release ‘any day now’.

That’s right, Playmaji is finally releasing update v1.1.32; and Playmaji has something else to sell us as well. I don’t know if the people at Playmaji have been reading this blog (that would be nice…mar dhea), but they seem to have hit upon the same strategy that I suggested Sega pursue, and release compilations of old games on a new platform. It was basically what Blaze are doing on the Evercade, but on a new Sega console; Playmaji are doing that with the Polymega and their ‘Collections’.

The new games will come on DVD discs, and at the moment two collections have been announced:

  • Polymega Collection Vol. 1 – Asteroids
  • Polymega Collectino Vol. 2 – Karate Champ

Despite what you might think, each collection contains more than just the title game. The Asteroids collection comes with eight titles (including Lunar Lander and Gravitar), three of which are Asteroids titles; Karate Champs has four titles included, with two being Karate Champ games.

The Asteroids collection

‘Polymega Collection is an ongoing series of important classic and contemporary games on physical media, playable exclusively on Polymega. Our editions include the original title game, its international releases, as well as additional examples of games that influenced the work and those which were eventually inspired by it.’

The new Polymega Collection games are available for purchase now from the official Polymega site, and Playmaji are promising that those games will ship within a week.

I would like to think that now would be the time that Playmaji could turn things around – and I hope they do – but given how things have gone up until now, I think a teaspoon of scepticism is understandable. Maybe Playmaji will introduce new emulators for other CD-based consoles in a free update down the line, maybe they’ll improve the emulation they already offer and maybe they’ll give us a new Game Boy Advance module to load our GBA, GBC and GB games, but we’ll have to wait and see.

Playing videogames, writing about videogames, considering videogames—that about sums it up. Videogames are the one hobby that I’ve kept since I was only little, zapping ducks on the NES or knocking out MR. X. And when I’m not enjoying classics from the bit generation of games or checking out those earliest of polygons, I’m probably playing something from today’s age of modern gaming: if I’m not complaining about it. Something I’m doing at the moment? I started dipping my toes in the vast sea of Kemco JRPGs.
