Claire Obscur: Expedition 33

Microsoft had their showcase for what would usually be E3 but is now Summer Game Fest season. Surprise was not the word for this showcase, what with most of what was having either already been shown before or being talked about before the show (I’m looking at you Doom). But one game that was a surprise was Claire Obscur: Expedition 33. A brand new RPG from young, French games studio Sandfall Interactive; Claire Obscur is a turn-based RPG with some quick-time-event button pressing during combat, with the game’s website mentioning ‘dodge parry and combat in real time, chain combos by mastering attack rhythms, and target enemy weak points using a free-aim system.’
And all of that in an apocalyptic fantasy world with Belle Époque influences.
Coming from the developers themselves, Sandfall Interactive is an independent studio that focuses on ‘new-gen’ and PC games. With that in mind, Claire Obscur: Expedition 33 is coming to Xbox Series, PS5 and PC, no last-gen consoles included.

Playing videogames, writing about videogames, considering videogames—that about sums it up. Videogames are the one hobby that I’ve kept since I was only little, zapping ducks on the NES or knocking out MR. X. And when I’m not enjoying classics from the bit generation of games or checking out those earliest of polygons, I’m probably playing something from today’s age of modern gaming: if I’m not complaining about it. Something I’m doing at the moment? Returning to the black hole that is Football Manager.
